Alright, so school is almost out and summer is on the horizon. More than likely you've already planned your summer vacations. This might be the beach, or the mountains. Or maybe visiting family out of state like we are. Or maybe you've been really wanting to explore a big city, scoping out museums, trying new restaurants. Whatever it might be, when planning a vacation for you and your family there are several things to consider in order to make sure you all have the best time!

Catching the train in Skagway, Alaska

First of all, what kind of vacation are you looking for? Are you wanting to do some sight seeing? Or something more relaxing like sitting at the beach or pool? And what do your kids like to do? You might not have the answer for that, or it all sounds fun. Sometimes travel is a bit of trial and error. It takes a few trips to figure out what works best for you and your family. (Also if you're kids are old enough, they might have an opinion on what they would like to do!) If you're going to a city to do some sight seeing, you are going to spend a lot of time walking and exploring. If going to a beach, it might be more play time at the pool or building sand castles and swimming in the ocean. Think about what you and your kids might enjoy the most. If your kids are younger, they may not get the most of out traveling to a certain place. For example, we planned a trip to Charleston, SC when my youngest for 5 months old. We ended up coming back early because it was just too difficult and exhausting to sight see with a 5 month old. Overall, just be sure to think about not only what you would enjoy. Consider what activities your kids might enjoy at their current stage of life as well.

Second, how do you want to get there? Flying might be the more expensive route but it might be neccessary to get to where you want to go. Or it might be the fastest way. It can also be more relaxing as you don't have to sit in a car and focus on the road for hours at a time. Driving gives you the convenience of having your own vehicle to get around. It also allows you more freedom to go where you want. You can also get away with overpacking a bit more which tends to be the case when you have kiddos under 3.

Third, how far do you want to go? If you have kids under 3 a time change can be more challenging. That might also involve a longer flight or car ride, so consider how your kids might deal with that. If you are planning on traveling outside of the US (even to Mexico or Canada), you will need a passport. If you don't already have one for you or your kids, it can take up to 3 months to get this back after turning in your paperwork and photos.

Fourth, where do you want to stay? Hotels are convenient as they are basically everywhere. If you checked out my previous post (linked here), you know that hotels give you more amenities overall such as access to a pool or gym, housekeeping services, 24hr access to staff, and extra needs for kids such as a crib. Generally, hotel stays can be easier to change and cancel as well. However, a home might be the better option if you want access to a kitchen to make your own meals, multiple bedrooms or bathrooms, and just more space overall.

I hope you this helps you plan your next family vacation and I hope it's enjoyable for everyone in the family! Please reach out with comments or questions! And safe travels!
